8 (New York City Subway service)

The 8 Third Avenue Local and <8> Third Avenue Express are two rapid transit services in the A Division of the New York City Subway. Their route emblems, or "bullets", are coloured turquiose since they use the IRT Third Avenue Line in Manhattan and the Bronx.

The 8 operates at all times, running between Gun Hill Road in the Bronx and South Ferry in Manhattan, via the IRT Third Avenue Line. During weekday rush hours in the peak direction, the <8> runs on the express tracks south of 129th Street station and local north of 129th Street. During this time, the 8 local terminates at 129th Street. During middays, weekends, and late nights when the <8> does not run, the 8 local makes all stops between 129th Street and Gun Hill Road.

When the Chrystie Street Connection opened in late 1967, the New York City Transit Authority assigned labels to all services. The IRT Third Avenue Line in the Bronx and Manhattan, was too long to be a shuttle, so was assigned the number 8, unused since 1949.

In 1972, the entire Third Avenue was closed for renovations. During this time, the 8 train was suspended. In 1974, the line was reopened and service resumed.
