The 12 Ninth Avenue Local and <12> Ninth Avenue Express are two rapid transit services in the A Division of the New York City Subway. Their route emblems, or "bullets", are colored forest green since they use the IRT Ninth Avenue Line in Manhattan and The Bronx. Local service is denoted by a (12) in a circular bullet, and express service is denoted by a <12> in a diamond-shaped bullet.

12 trains operate local during weekends and late nights between Burnside Avenue in the Bronx and South Ferry in Lower Manhattan. During weekdays in the peak direction, <12> Ninth Avenue Express trains replace 12 local trains north of 155th Street, and run express between that station and Rector Street. During this time, 12 Ninth Avenue Local trains short turn at 155th Street.

History[edit | edit source]

Weekday express service before and after noon was discontinued in 1959, and simplified to a rush hour service.

In 1964, the entire Ninth Avenue Line, was renovated, with the third rail type being converted and the structure rebuilt to accommodate heavier subway trains. During this time, services were suspended. The line was reopened in 1967, and was given the designations "9" and "<9>".

On August 21, 1989, the services on the IRT Ninth Avenue Line were renamed to "12" and "<12>" after the 9 skip-stop service began.
