==History== Weekday express service before and after noon was discontinued in 1959, and simplified to a rush hour service. In 1964, the entire Ninth Avenue Line, was renovated, with the third rail type being converted and the structure rebuilt to accommodate heavier subway trains. During this time, services were suspended. The line was reopened in 1967, and was given the designations "9" and "<9>". On August 21, 1989, the services on the IRT Ninth Avenue Line were renamed to "12" and "<12>" after the 9 skip-stop service began.
